Grand Canyon National Park Maswik Lodge

Grand Canyon Village, AZ

Client: National Park Services

Scope of Work: Ground up New Construction & Electrical

About the Project: Nestled in the Ponderosa Pine Forest, this lodge sits a short 0.4 km from the Grand Canyons Edge at the South Rim. This lodge was originally built in 1927 and was named the “Motor Lodge”. It was a growing trend to bring one’s own automobiles up to national parks instead of taking a train, and during the 1940s there were 36 new cabins added and 22 rooms brought from Bright Angel, a neighboring lodging. The 120 individual cabins were demolished in the 1960s and replaced with a total of 280 rooms. The updated “Maswik” name comes from a Hopi Kachina that is said to guard the Grand Canyon.

The new construction took place in the lodges’ southern section. The new Maswik South rooms are composed of 4 2-story buildings with 90 standard rooms and 30 kitchenettes, all with patios and elevator accessible. The new development is modern, clean, comfortable, and family-friendly, all while keeping the same cabin charm as the original building. To keep the history, the original buildings of the North Maswik Lodge are still standing right next door, and the 4 buildings on the grounds are named after fossils found at the Grand Canyon. The Maswik North rooms are located in 12 2-story buildings and are only accessible by stairs. The whole property is filled with other amenities, and a few from the extensive list include free shuttles, 24-hour front desk, free cribs & infant beds, bars & restaurants, and free wi-fi.
