About the Project: The Lukeville Port of Entry is a popular Port for those heading to Puerto Penasco, connecting Arizona State Route 85 with Mexican Federal Highway 8. The port was built in 1949 and is both used for pedestrians and passenger vehicles. The Port is a 3-hour drive from Phoenix and a 6-hour drive from San Diego.

To combat drug and violence issues, agents from Homeland Security will stop you and ask if you’re carrying guns, ammunition, and if you have $10,000 or more in cash, as well as look in your vehicle and ask the purpose of the trip. Once you cross over into Mexico, Mexican Border Patrol agents will stop you once again and ask the occasion of the trip, and red & green stop lights will tell a vehicle whether they can proceed or if they need to pull over for inspection. Heading into Mexico, travelers are looking at only a 30-45 minute wait, but on the way back, travelers should be prepared to wait several hours, as both sides only have 1 & 2 lanes to operate with apart from holidays where 5 lanes can be opened.
